Title: “The Stoic Theory of Emotions”

Speaker: Dr. Melissa Merritt (Philosophy, UNSW)

Abstract:

Stoic philosophers famously held that a wise or virtuous person is free of emotion (apathēs), because emotions (pathē) are expressions of deep confusion about what is and is not genuinely valuable. This theory is often caricatured, and has (to put it mildly) met with no shortage of criticism. My aim is to examine the theory and its underlying psychological commitments in a charitable light, and open up discussion about whether Stoic apatheia is something we ought to strive for.
