Dear All,

You are warmly invited to the Macquarie University Ethics and Agency
Research Centre public panel on "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of
Work".

Date: Thursday October 19

Time: 6-7:30pm

Venue: Macquarie University City Campus (level 24/123 Pitt Street, Sydney
NSW 2000).

Panel Abstract

Recent rapid developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have significant
implications for how we may work in the future. These technologies include
generative large language models such as GPT and robots that carry out
everything from war, to manufacturing, to surgery. How will AI affect our
ways of working in the coming years and decades? Answering this question is
challenging. Work is not just drudgery we do to make money but also
something that embodies our values and projects. Work often provides the
opportunity to engage in collective action and develop a sense of identity
and meaning. At the same time, AI is often trained using immense amounts of
micro-work by underpaid workers and contractors in the global South.

This panel will explore the prospects of work in the age of AI from
philosophical, ethical, political, economic, and legal perspectives, with
expert input from Professor Jean-Philippe Deranty (Department of
Philosophy, Macquarie University), Associate Professor Sarah Bankins
(Department of Management, Macquarie University), and Dr Yves Saint James
Aquino (Australian Centre for Health Engagement, Evidence and Values,
University of Wollongong). The conversation will be facilitated by one of
Macquarie University's experts in AI and cognitive science, Dr Inēs
Hipólito. Interested members of the public from Sydney and surrounding
areas are warmly invited to attend and to share their perspectives.

Please note that this panel will be followed by a catered reception. All
attendees are welcome to join the reception and continue the conversations.

Attendance is free but we do ask that if you plan to attend you RSVP at
