Reading Group on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics



The Institute for Ethics and Society at the University of Notre Dame Australia, in partnership with the School of Philosophy and Theology, is excited to be hosting a reading group on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics this academic year.



The group will meet on one Thursday per month, from February to November, from 1-3pm (Sydney time), on UNDA Sydney’s Broadway campus and online. For those attending in person, a catered lunch will be provided. The meeting and reading schedule is below.



All participants are welcome, including undergraduates, HDR students, postdocs, and faculty. Participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they like and do not need to commit to attending for the whole year.



The reading group will involve close study and discussion of the primary text. No prior knowledge of Aristotle or Ancient Greek philosophy is required. We will read the text in English translation, so no knowledge of Ancient Greek is required either.



The reading group is being organised in conjunction with UNDA’s AristotleFest2024, which consists of two major events in August: first, an international conference on Aristotle’s ethics (August 1-2); second, the Notre Dame Winter School on Aristotle’s Ethics (August 5-7). Confirmed speakers at these events include Roger Crisp (Oxford), Margaret Hampson (St. Andrews), Sukaina Hirji (Penn), Marta Jimenez (Emory), Rachana Kamtekar (Cornell), and Rachel Singpurwalla (Maryland). The reading group and AristotleFest2024 present an exciting opportunity to take a deep dive into one of the most important, influential, and interesting texts in the history of philosophy. Participating in the reading group will be excellent preparation for AristotleFest2024, which in turn will enhance our study of the text in the reading group during the second half of the year.



The reading group will be led by A/Prof David Bronstein in connection with his ARC Future Fellowship project ‘Virtue with Aristotle: Recovering an Ancient Ethical Theory for Our Time’.
