[SydPhil] University of Sydney Philosophy Seminar Series: Tom Dougherty

Hi everyone,

This week’s speaker in the University of Sydney Philosophy Seminar Series is Tom Dougherty (University of North Carolina).

The title of Tom’s talk is “Social Scripts”. Here’s the abstract for Tom’s talk:

Social scripts specify the normal way for people to interact in certain situations. For example, a social script for a restaurant conversation explains why the world over, these conversations take a similar form. I will discuss what social scripts are, how they can scaffold or constrain people’s behavior (e.g. by leading people to voluntarily take part in sexual encounters that they would ideally like to avoid), and how these constraints could be ameliorated by more empowering scripts.

The talk will take place on Wednesday the 9th of August at 3:30 p.m. in the Philosophy Seminar Room (N494) in the Quadrangle and will be simulcast via Zoom: https://uni-sydney.zoom.us/j/88699564848.
